edition_2008LFF as a way of escape from the risk of being gobbled up by the voracity of the contemporary world. Cinema as emergency exit from a global annoying reality. Short films as an alternative to brutality and oppression. In our graphic, this year, it is clear that the character of Pac Man represents China, that in current events, but also in news, represents the attempt of one (of the many) world powers to attack and cancel those that could become real ghosts of the contemporary world: civil and human rights, sustainable socio-economic, environmental, peace. In the year of Olympic games, which have always been symbol of peace and exchange between peoples of the world, the LFF is a sort of response to these risks. Art, culture, and society are antidotes against the disease of violence and non-senses! Do not get bitten, make movie: do not get give a damn, let’s move! If we don’t. Pac Man will eat us. Massimiliano Selvaggi – President Alellammie

Pisticci, Short Film Village – Municipality of Pisticci
The vitality of a municipality is also linked also the ability of the different actors who are part in an active way in order of promote initiatives which can constitute opportunities for development and comparison. In this context all those useful actions linked to the cultural growth of the community are very important and it is able to represent an attractive that can let people consider Pisticci as a pole of reference in a specific sector. The association Allelammie has succeeded in this purpose creating Lucania Film Festival, an event able to catalyse the attention of filmmakers from all over the world, in such a context as the historic centre of Pisticci, which during the festival becomes a reference point not only for the world of cinema, but also for a series of parallel events which, altogether, represent the strength of this event. Such an administration who doesn’t care about these kinds of initiatives, demonstrates that it doesn’t care about the growth of the community it represents; for this reason our commitment, with this farsighted project, will be made up in the full conviction that the work done should be supported by everybody, so that this event could always occupy major positions and have a high resonance in the interest of our community. The association between the Municipality of Pisticci and Lucania Film Festival, therefore, is natural, and we want to encourage with confidence and conviction this initiative, helped by all those forms of collaboration useful for the increasing growth of a festival which already today represents an example of virtuous organization, capable of collecting important results and of placing Pisticci in a large reference landscape. CSV Basilicata
In such a context and in such a historic moment characterized by the spirit of individualism and separation, we think that it is absolutely important to start a process through which we can put together and make a contribution to weave the plots of a community that is going to get exhausted. Here it is the idea to open a section entitled Cinema and Volunteering, as part of Lucania Film Festival. Born entirely in tune with the spirit and philosophy of the organisers of the Festival, the section is meant to be a bridge to link the themes of Culture and Solidarity. We are absolutely convinced that the language of film is a beautiful and nice opportunity to review the maps of our imagination and our idea of inhabiting the world. An “inhabiting” in which we must not forget that our experience is a total living of our community, of the others. Including those who, in the name of dialogue, of reciprocity and of relationships, have the duty to go and meet the margins of history and world. President CSV Basilicata Mario Sarli

Representation of the European Commission in Italy
Today more than ever we need living culture to lay the foundations of dialogue amongst people. Cinema possesses the formidable power of providing a universal language mirroring the cultural diversities indispensable to represent the complexity of the world and of the human condition. Therefore, today more than ever we need a European cinema, a cinema that gives expression to European values and to the European cultural heritage resulting from centuries of creativity, migrations and exchanges, a cinema that reflects all the components of the European spirit: openness, respect for the others and diversity. This is why the European Commission welcomes the multiplication of efforts at regional and local level aiming to develop the exchange and to spread the knowledge of cinematographic works, in particular those encouraging intercultural dialogue.
