Rocco Derosa: 10 august 2010
LFF 2010 will open with a very evocative special event: in the night of San Lorenzo, the pianist and composer from Lucania, Rocco De Rosa, in a show of great lyricism, will comment by piano Chaplin’s masterpiece “The Kid”. The relationship between music and cinema or, generally, between music and images, has always characterized Rocco De Rosa’s music research, not only because of his big passion for the art of film, but also for a natural “visible” force of its compositions. Not by chance, his music has been chosen by directors like Olmi, Moretti, Maselli. The idea that cinema, joined in its original dimension, can reach such an high level of emotion or entertainment, is totally unexpected for the audience and, in the Chaplin’s case, the involvement affects both adults and children. Through the improvisation and emotion of the moment, the pianist follows and comments the story, sequence by sequence. The stylistic references to old music or original soundtrack are just remotely evoked and what you will hear is a modern but classic style at the same time, because of a melodic expressiveness perceived as “familiar”, natural, through a modern sensitivity. Rocco De Rosa lives and works in Rome since ‘95. His musical activity embraces various artistic fields, in particular movies (Moretti, Olmi, Reali, Miniero, Genovese, La Nubile, Astuti, etc.), documentaries, television, theatre and dance. As a pianist, he’s been directing for many years the multi-ethnic group “Hata”, a project created in 1996 following the publication of the album “Trasmigrazioni”, edited by De Rosa, with Daniele Sepe and Paolo Fresu. “Hatha” is also the title of the album published in ‘98, by which Putumayo World Music of New York has chosen the song “Malonga” (written by Rocco De Rosa and sung by Martin Kongo) to put in the compilation “One World, Many Cultures” with artists like Alan Stivell, Youssou N’Dour, Cheb Mami, Ziggy Marley. His latest work, “Rotte Distratte”, 2002, has represented a revival of the sound and musicality more closely related to Mediterranean culture, through a peculiar cross between minimalism, jazz and popular music. Moreover, De Rosa was present in the 2003, 2004 and 2006 editions of Letterature – International Rome Festival, commenting by piano the texts read by the authors Paco Ignacio Taibo II, Hanif Kureishi,Colson Whitehead, Abasse Ndione ,Richard Ford and Sandro Veronesie and by the actors Paolo Bonacelli, Sandro Lombardi, Licia Maglietta, Valeria Golino and Isabella Ferrari.
